Chapter 10

Terms

  1. Transmission – the function of a common carrier that allows information to be passed form CPE to CPE
  2. Attenuation – The energy of the signal is decreased by the medium as the signal travels from start to finished.
  3. dBs – what attenuation is messured in. It is expressed as the relationship between power input and the power output.
  4. Gain – when the power out is more then the power in.
  5. Loss – when the power out is less then the power in
  6. Hybrid Term Sets –  a device used to convert from a 2-wire to a 4-wire and then back to a 2-wire.
  7. Singing – when an echo energy leaks back in to the return circuit at the other end and is amplified.
  8. Propagation – term that describes an electrical signal moving along a transmission medium in telecommunications network.
  9. Echo suppressors – electronic devices to help minimize the effects of undesired noise.
  10. Trunk Circuits – all trunk communication paths have an interface between the switching equipment and transmission facility.
  11. Line Conditioning – the application of long line adapters or loop extenders which are used to extend the signal.
  12. Supervision – one of two signaling types that is used in trunk circuits. It runs on a SF tone of 2600 Hz when the phone is on-hook (no one is using the phone) When it is taken off the hook then a signal of “No SF tone” is sent setting it to standby.
